The name that was frequently linked to the club was Lissandro Martinez of Ajax, in which Arteta was keen on together with Manchester United.
The gunners had reportedly submitted a bid in the region of €45m to the dutch giants, but the club had turned down the bid.
However United who were also interested in the mecurial defender, met the asking price for the defender, which was in the region of €65m and are set to complete the deal for the defender, with the gunners losing out.
Since then Mikel Arteta has turned his attention else where, and as reported by the reliable David Ornstein the gunners are in talks to sign Manchester City defender Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The 25-year-old versatility can’t be underestimated, as he can operate as a left-back and also as a central-midfielder a position which he has played in while in action for his country, Ukraine.
Why Mikel Arteta Is Keen On Zinchenko:
Towards the business end of last season when Kieran Tierney picked up a season ending knee injury, Nuno Tavares brought in from Benfica deputised for him in his absence.
However the Portuguese youngster didn’t live up to expectations, as he flattered to deceive in various occasions when called upon by Arteta.
The more reason why Arteta doesn’t want to gamble with the youngster again, and is keen on Zinchenko to provide competition and cover for Tierney.
But it seems Zinchenko’s arrival might guarantee Tavares departure on loan, with Marseille said to be interested in the youngster.
